The Pieniny Mountains and the spa town of Szczawnica are a region that is increasingly welcoming tourists traveling with their pets. When planning a trip to the mountains with your dog, it's worth finding out in advance where your four-legged friend will be welcome and where certain restrictions apply.

Where to go with your dog in the Pieniny Mountains and Szczawnica?
Please remember that there are strict restrictions on dogs in Pieniny National Park. dogs are not allowed on most hiking trails in PPN, including popular routes on Three Crowns and Sokolica, as well as in the area of Niedzica Castle and the Palenica ski lift. This is to protect wildlife and unique nature. However, there are numerous alternatives and places that accept pets, offering wonderful opportunities for walks and hikes:
- Pienińska Road (Szczawnica – Červený Kláštor). This is one of the most beautiful and accessible trails in the region, running along the Dunajec River. As a public road, you can freely walk your dog on a leash along it, admiring the majestic views. It's worth remembering that the Slovak side of the Pieniny Mountains, including the section of the Pieniny Road from Červený Kláštor, is generally more dog-friendly. On the Pieniny National Park website, in the "Pets" section, you'll find general rules regarding dogs in national parks, which also apply to the Pieniny National Park in the context of roads.
- Little Pieniny. This region is ideal for mountain hiking with a dog. Trails in the Małe Pieniny Mountains offer equally beautiful views, and their regulations are more liberal regarding pets.
- Beskid Sądecki (e.g. the trail to Radziejowa) and Lubań. These are another excellent option for dog owners. These nearby mountain ranges offer numerous dog-friendly trails, providing beautiful panoramas and plenty of space to run.
- Areas outside the strict PPN trails. Around Szczawnica and nearby towns (e.g., Krościenko nad Dunajcem), you'll find many forest and field paths that are not part of the National Park and where you can freely walk your dog. Always pay attention to local signs.
- Homole Gorge. Although the gorge itself is a nature reserve and dogs are not allowed on the trail there, the access road and the surrounding areas around the village of Jaworki, where the gorge is located, can be good for walking. Always make sure you don't enter the reserve.
Before setting off, make sure your dog is in good physical condition for hiking, has protection against ticks and parasites, and is up-to-date on vaccinations. If you plan to cross the border into Slovakia, consider obtaining a pet passport. Always keep your dog on a leash and ensure its identification.
