The most beautiful viewpoints in Szczawnica and the surrounding area

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

For years, Szczawnica has been attracting lovers of mountain scenery, the murmur of the Dunajec River, and the clean air of the Pieniny Mountains. Although the spa town's walking paths wind charmingly through the valley, the true magic of the Pieniny Mountains lies a little higher up. If you're wondering where to go for a walk to admire breathtaking panoramas, here's a list of the most beautiful viewpoints in Szczawnica and its immediate surroundings.

Palenica

This is undoubtedly the most recognizable landmark in Szczawnica. You can easily reach the summit of Palenica (722 m above sea level) by chairlift or hike the yellow trail in about 40-50 minutes. Right at the upper lift station, there's also a unique educational trail and a stroller slide, providing additional fun for the little ones. It's an ideal destination for families with children, seniors, and anyone who wants to enjoy the views without the strenuous climb. At the top, there's also a mountain hut and a wide range of dining options, where you can relax with a coffee and a mountain view.

What will you see? From the summit, a sweeping panorama unfolds over the Pieniny Mountains, the Sądecki Beskids, and, on clear days, the majestic, soaring peaks of the Tatra Mountains. This view changes dramatically with the seasons, delighting with a riot of color, especially in autumn.

Saffron vodka

Just a 15-20-minute walk from Palenica (a gentle ridge toward the Slovak border) is Szafranówka (742 m above sea level). The trail to its summit is exceptionally picturesque, and along the way, you'll pass charming, sunny glades perfect for a quick picnic.

What will you see? A beautiful view of the Dunajec River Gorge, the Małe Pieniny Mountains, and the gentle, green hills of Slovakia. It's the perfect place to catch the sunset without the crowds that often gather at Palenica itself. From this perspective, you can also clearly see the urban layout of Szczawnica, which lies below.

Sokolica

Although the trail to Sokolica (747 m above sea level) requires a bit more effort, good footwear, and steep climbs, the reward at the summit is iconic. Along the way, it's worth noting the unique limestone vegetation and the unique microclimate found in the higher reaches of the Pieniny Właściwe Mountains.

What will you see? Vertical, over 300-meter drops drop straight into the winding Dunajec Riverbed. The view of the river meandering below and the serene backdrop of the Pieniny Mountains, featuring the famous relict Sosna na Sokolica, is one of the most memorable views in the Polish mountains. Mists hovering just above the river gorge in the morning create a truly mystical atmosphere.

Three Crowns

While in Szczawnica, it's impossible to miss the highest peak in the Pieniny Właściwe Mountains (982 m above sea level). The distinctive viewing platform, perched on the highest rock (Okrąglica), is accessed via an openwork metal footbridge suspended over a chasm, which in itself provides a significant dose of excitement.

What will you see? An absolutely complete, 360-degree panorama: the meanders of the Dunajec River, the historic Červený Kláštor in Slovakia, the Gorce Mountains, the Sądecki Beskids and the full range of the Tatra Mountains.

Tip: During the summer season, long queues form to access the platform itself, so it's worth setting off at dawn. An early start not only allows you to avoid the crowds but also to experience the unforgettable spectacle of the sunrise above the clouds.

Wysoka (Wysokie Skałki) - the highest peak of the Pieniny Mountains

For those looking for a slightly longer and more varied trek, Wysokie Skałki (1050 m above sea level) in the Małe Pieniny Mountains is the ideal destination. The route offers exceptional natural beauty, passing through the Wysokie Skałki Reserve, where a natural spruce mountain forest has been preserved.

What will you see? From the secured platform at the summit, a wild, rugged panorama unfolds, encompassing the Slovak Tatras, the Spiš Magura, and the rolling Pieniny and Beskid Sądecki ranges. The trail itself, leading through the charming Homole Gorge, provides unforgettable visual experiences with every kilometer of the hike.

Take care of your footwear. Even short climbs in the Pieniny Mountains (e.g., the steep sections to Sokolica or Trzy Korony) can be rocky and slippery, especially after rain. Comfortable shoes with good grip are essential for a safe hike.

Times of day. The best light for photos of the Tatra Mountains from the Pieniny Mountains is early in the morning when the air is clear or just before sunset, when the mountains are bathed in a warm, orange hue.
