The Redyk is one of the most colorful and authentic cultural events in mountainous regions, including Podhale and the Beskid Mountains. It's more than just a simple animal crossing—it's a ceremonial, centuries-old event. pastoral tradition, which every year sets the rhythm of life for the local community.
What is Redyk and when does it take place?
The redyk is the ceremonial movement of sheep flocks to and from pasture. There are two main terms:
- Spring Redyk (Spring Transit). It usually takes place at the turn of April and May. This is a ceremonial taking of the sheep to the pastures (grazing) after a winter stopover in the valleys.
- Autumn Redyk (Autumn Return). It takes place in September or early October. This is a ceremonial drive of sheep from the mountain pastures back to their homes, marking the end of the grazing season and marking the shepherd's settlement with the flock owners.
What is this spectacular ceremony about?
Redyk is a true celebration that attracts crowds of tourists. It is led by shepherds (chief shepherds) and juhasi, dressed in traditional highland costumes. The procession is incredibly spectacular, with hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of sheep marching along the route, accompanied by the sound of bells and traditional music.
The ceremony also has a deep symbolic and religious dimension, beginning and ending with symbolic rites intended to ensure the safety of the flocks and the success of the shepherding work. For tourists, it is a unique opportunity to witness a living, undisturbed tradition and experience the true atmosphere of the mountains. Although Redyk takes place in many towns in the Podhale and Pieniny regions, the journey to Szczawnica or its surroundings is an ideal base for taking part in this extraordinary event in the appropriate season.
